ARE GENERICS A CREDIBLE ALTERNATIVE
Each time you buy medicine, you are faced with the incomprehensible choice between a branded and generic drug. We say you can go for the generic drug. Of course, you may question their credibility and efficacy. Our response again favours generic drugs. We are here to tell you they have a similar efficacy and safety profile, with the advantage of being cost-effective.
The debate around the credibility of generic medicines goes back to the 19th century, even when there were no standardised guidelines to regulate the quality and efficacy of drugs. In 1930, the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) was formed, and since then, it has revolutionised the way drugs are manufactured, marketed, and regulated, globally. Similarly, in other developed countries, various healthcare agencies, EMA, TGA, and the like, have come up over the decades to ensure drugs are being produced and marketed in a regulated manner. Typically, suppose USFDA or EMA approves a drug, it’s a benchmark that the drug is safe and effective for use. The company getting the approval can market it internationally without much hassle.
Globally, the use of generic medicines is on a boom. The credibility of generic medicines can be estimated from the fact that in 2016, 9 out of 10 prescriptions in the United States were filled with generic medicines. Standardised approach and transparency in the approval process have paved the way for pharmaceutical companies to manufacture generic alternatives and market them in the US or European markets. This has given the Indian Pharmaceutical Industry a big boost as they cover 74% of the global generic drug supply. Generic drugs are cost-effective equivalents to branded drugs and produce a similar effect. They are available in the same formulations, dosage forms, and doses; and are affordable for the weaker sections of society.

January, 1880: Incandescent Lamp
Patent No. 223,898 was granted to Thomas A. Edison for an electric lamp for giving light by incandescence. In the period from 1878 to 1880 Edison and his associates worked on at least three thousand different theories to develop an efficient incandescent lamp. Incandescent lamps make light by using electricity to heat a thin strip of material (called a filament) until it gets hot enough to glow.
February, 1953: DNA
Cambridge University scientists James Watson and Francis Crick announce they have discovered the fundamental behavior and double-helix structure of DNA. Though scientists had been aware of DNA since the 1860s and its role in genetic inheritance since 1943, Watson and Crick were the first to explain how DNA works to replicate itself and pass on genes from one generation to the next.

Robert Norton Noyce, nicknamed "the Mayor of Silicon Valley", was an American physicist who co-founded Intel Corporation in 1968. He is also credited with the realization of the first monolithic integrated circuit or microchip, which fueled the personal computer revolution and gave Silicon Valley its name.Noyce's invention was the first monolithic integrated circuit chip that could be mass-produced, Noyce's monolithic IC chip put all components on a chip of silicon and connected them with copper lines.
May, 1888: Electrical Transmission of Power
Nikola Tesla was a inventor, electrical engineer, mechanical engineer, and futurist best known for his contributions to the design of the modern alternating current (AC) electricity supply system. Tesla studied engineering and physics in the 1870s without receiving a degree, gaining practical experience in the early 1880s working in telephony and at Continental Edison in the new electric power industry In 1887, Tesla developed an induction motor that ran on alternating current (AC), a power system format that was rapidly expanding in Europe and the United States because of its advantages in long-distance, high-voltage transmission.This innovative electric motor, patented in May 1888, was a simple self-starting design that did not need a commutator, thus avoiding sparking and the high maintenance of constantly servicing and replacing mechanical brushes.

September, 1888: Kodak Camera
The first successful roll-film hand camera, the Kodak, was launched publicly in the summer of 1888. Inventor George Eastman received a patent (number 388,850) for the camera's shutter and the trademark (number 15,825) for the Kodak name on September 4, 1888.
October, 1941: Xerography
The xerographic process, which was invented by Chester Carlson in 1938 and developed and commercialized by the Xerox Corporation, is widely used to produce high-quality text and graphic images on paper and it was patented in 1941.
November, 1979: Artificial Heart
Robert Jarvik received a patent for his total artificial hearts and cardiac assist devices powered and controlled by reversible electrohydraulic energy converters. In 1982, Seattle dentist Barney Clark became the first human to receive a permanent artificial heart, a device known as the Jarvik 7. In an interview shortly after the implantation of the pump, Clark expresses his desire to help advance science. He survived for 112 days on the mechanical organ.
December, 1621: Telescope
Galileo perfected his invention of the telescope. The basic tool that Galileo used was a crude refract-ing telescope. His initial version only magnified 8x but was soon refined to the 20x magnification he used for his observations for Sidereus nuncius. It had a convex objective lens and a concave eyepiece in a long tube. The main problem with his telescopes was their very narrow field of view, typically about half the width of the Moon.
